Amicalola Falls State Park - 07/14/09
Amicalola Falls is located near Dawsonville which is almost directly north of Atlanta. It has the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River at a total height of 729 feet. Like all of the "Canyon Climbers Club" trails, this one was strenuous, but it was well worth the work. Here are a few pictures.
After we did our climb, we took a side trip over to Dahlonega where we did a 6-mile trip down the Chestatee River. We had planned on getting a 3-person canoe, but the good folks at Appalachian Outfitters suggested that 3 adults in a canoe might be too much for the water depth at the time, so they gave us a canoe and a single-person kayak for the price of a 3-person canoe ($48). That price also covers the life jackets, paddles and a shuttle back to their location once you're done. This is a very relaxing paddle downstream with just a tad of Class 1 whitewater. We saw lots of turtles sunning on logs. Give it a try if you're ever in the Dahlonega area.
