Reed Bingham State Park - 07/08/09
This was our 4th canoe trip for the "Park Paddlers Club". This park is located in Adel, about 6 miles off of I-75 in south Georgia. We rented the canoe for a half day ($15) and they shuttled us to Red Roberts Landing at Roundtree Bridge, the starting point of the paddle. You will see alligators on this 3.5-mile trip. I made plenty of noise because I didn't want to see them too close. They seemed to want to avoid us and that was fine with me. The water here is completely black, so the only way you're going to see them is if they're on the surface. Once you put the boat in the water, you just head downstream. You can make a wrong turn or two, but unless you're directionally challenged, finding your way is no problem. Pick up a map at the park office and take a compass just in case. There is absolutely nothing between the start and finish. If it rains, you're going to get wet. We got caught in a heavy shower for about 5 minutes, just enough to cool us off and there was no lightning, so it wasn't that bad.
This park is known for its buzzard population where thousands of them roost in the tress in the winter months. We saw a few of them.
The people who work at these state parks are always nice, but the park volunteers we met here were super nice. This would be a nice place to stretch your legs when you're on your way down to Florida or on your way back.
