Stephen C. Foster State Park - 07/08/09
What can I say about the Okefenokee? This was our 5th "Park Paddlers Club" canoe trip. We rented a canoe for 2 hours ($10). They probably have 40 canoes, but I didn't see anyone else on the trail in a canoe. The paddle is an easy 2 mile paddle over to Billy's island and then 2 miles back. You will see alligators on this trip too. If you see one in front of you like we did, you should make some noise. That should make it move out of the channel and over to the side, which it did in our case. If it doesn't you'll have to wait it out. It gets a little spooky as you get close to Billy's island. The channel is narrow there. We saw a huge alligator in that area...we had apparently passed right by it without seeing it and it wanted us to know it was there. It splashed around behind us and made some noise of its own. Then we had to turn around on go back through that narrow space again...with eyes wide open. We also saw a smaller alligator sunning on a log. The rest of them were swimming around, shying away from us for the most part.
You have to go see this park once and take your children. If you don't feel comfortable with the canoe trip, the park will take you out on a tour on a pontoon boat. When you go, make sure you fill the car up near the interstate. There's not much near the park as far as development goes.
